Empowering Women with Solar Sister

Delivering Change

In recognition of International Women’s Day 2022, we are excited to share with you the latest news from our amazing partner, Solar Sister, a women-centred network that empowers African women living in rural areas to start their own sustainable solar energy businesses, with the aim of eradicating energy poverty by empowering women with economic opportunity.

With electricity coverage intermittent throughout rural Sub-Saharan Africa, and with centralised power grids yet to reach ‘last mile’ communities, people living in these areas rely on expensive, low quality and potentially harmful energy options.

Solar Sister supports local African women by helping them create their own sustainable businesses, selling clean energy to their consumers by supplying them with solar lights, phone chargers and clean cooking stoves to sell on to their local communities in Tanzania and Nigeria. As of today, over 6700 Solar Sister entrepreneurs have reached over 2.9 million people in Africa with clean energy.

At the beginning of 2020, before the pandemic, we called on you all, woman to woman, to delve into your wardrobes or shoe cupboards and offer up any of your preloved Penelope Chilvers boots.

You responded brilliantly and we are delighted to say that, thanks to your generous donations, Solar Sister businesswomen are now wearing these very boots, to go anywhere and do anything! In even the most challenging conditions, come heavy rain or burning sun, these women overcome rough terrains to reach their ‘last mile’ customers, to supply them with valuable energy sources.

As a brand that makes boots to empower women and inspire a can-do attitude, with your help, we intend to continue and expand this great work, ultimately helping more women gain confidence, financial independence, and self achievement in the world today.
